Just 54 seconds into the game Phillip Danault made a costly turnover and Auston Matthews beat Jake Allen on a wrap around. It was not the start that the Canadiens were looking for against a potent Maple Leafs lineup. But a minute and 21 seconds later, Corey Perry had tied the score.
The Canadiens were fortunate to exit the first period tied as the Leafs controlled the play for long stretches. Montreal dominated the second period outshooting Toronto 17-4. Allen was struggling with rebound control throughout the game but fortunately had little to do in the middle frame.
The Leafs took advantage of a puck off the skate of Victor Mete for an early third-period goal. Mete had lost a board battle on the same shift giving Toronto possession. The Leafs would add another in the middle of the period on their way to their 27th victory of the season.
Jonathan Drouin has now gone 18 games without a goal and still does not have a power-play goal on the season. Yet Drouin remains the fourth most used forward on the team ahead of Josh Anderson, Brendan Gallagher, Tomas Tatar, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The interim head coach thinks he has been playing well.
The Canadiens have just one win in four games with the Maple Leafs so far this season. Toronto has an 8-0-1 record in their last nine games.
The Canadiens traveled back to Montreal following the game. The Habs will face the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.
